Crêpe or Pancake? Why Crêpes called Pancakes" in the UK?
In the UK, “pancake” is a familiar and beloved term that encompasses various styles, including traditional English pancakes, American-style fluffy pancakes, and French crêpes. Our pancakes are a unique combination of French, Italian, and British influences—thicker than French crêpes but thinner than American pancakes. Using the term “pancakes” ensures clarity and simplicity for our customers, helping us connect with our audience and align our marketing efforts. This avoids confusion that might arise from terms like “galettes” or “crêpes.” Additionally, in daily English, “pancake” is more appealing, avoiding any negative connotations that might come with a term sounding like “creepy.”
Much like how brands change names in different countries (e.g., Lays), we adapt our product naming to resonate with our local audience, ensuring everyone knows exactly what delicious treats they can expect from Pancake Events. We recognize that this naming convention can be confusing for expats and foreigners living in the UK, who might be more familiar with the terms “crêpes” or “galettes.” However, by using “pancakes,” we aim to provide a clear and consistent experience for all our customers.
What is the difference between a crêpe (pancake) and a galette?
How many crêpes can you make in 1hr?
On average, 1 chef can cook about 45 sweet crêpes or 35
How much power do you need?
With the electric machines please note that we need to plug them into a WALL SOCKET within 10m of our tables. We’ll bring our specialist extension lead to connect to it if necessary but cannot plug into another extension lead as it won’t accommodate the voltage of our machines, so it has to be into a wall socket for each machine.
How much time do you need to set up?
For our standard set up we’re ready to go in about 45min but will typically arrive 1 hour in advance just in case. However, please let us know if there are any access/unloading/parking restrictions as these might impact our timings.
Can you cater in historic buildings?
We would recommend that you check with your venue first if they are happy to accommodate outside caterers and if they are, we would be happy to liaise directly with them to discuss their requirements.
How much space do you need?
If you want us outside in our gazebo, then we need a 3m x 3m space, if possible in an area sheltered from the wind. If inside, 2m x 2m is largely sufficient for our standard set up.
Do you cater to specific allergies?
Our classic pancake batter, used for both sweet and savory pancakes, contains white flour and is not gluten-free. However, we offer a gluten-free option made with buckwheat flour (sarrasin), traditionally used for French galettes. While we cannot guarantee it is 100% gluten-free due to milling processes, it is a close alternative. We provide a variety of toppings to suit all tastes. Although we thoroughly clean our griddles between each crêpe, we cannot ensure they are entirely free from nuts or other allergens present in our toppings.
What about health & safety?
Health and safety are our top priorities. Pancakes are classified as low-risk food since they involve simple cooking, and we never use uncooked raw meat products in our menus. We shop for ingredients fresh for each event, ensuring the highest quality and safety. Our team holds Level 2 Food Hygiene certificates and undergoes thorough training and monitoring before, during, and after events. We provide comprehensive safety documentation, including Food Allergens Statements, Health Safety Risk Assessments, and both Food and Fire Safety Risk Assessments. We are fully food-safe trained and insured, with regularly tested equipment. We also bring a fire extinguisher and fire blanket to each event. For your peace of mind, we can supply all necessary certificates and risk assessments upon request.
Can you also provide drinks or other foods?
We would be happy to. We can provide you with soft and hot drinks, salads, nibbles and more.

Is this service expensive?
Well, when it comes to providing an innovative service like this, costs can vary significantly in London. Factors such as guest count, menu choices, event location, and additional services like custom branding and dietary accommodations play a role. Whether you’ve opted for a basic or luxury menu, we candidly admit we’re not the cheapest. Yet, we strike a balance between cost and quality, ensuring you receive exceptional value without being the most expensive option.
How Much Notice Do I Need to Book?
We always strive to be flexible and accommodating for our clients. Ideally, a notice period of one month is helpful for us to ensure everything is prepared to perfection. While we do our best to accommodate last-minute bookings, please note that these may cost approximately three times more due to the urgency. To ensure a smooth and well-coordinated event, we kindly request that you book and finalize all details at least one month in advance.
Where can I try your products?
What do you need to set up?
Well… pretty much nothing! We bring everything we need for our crêpe station, including tables, gazebo, table clothes, machines, disposable cones & cutlery. The only thing we might need is power to use our crêpe machines or if we need to plug in
How far do you travel?
We typically travel to and around London within 1h of where we are based – in SW London. However if you have a very special/large event a bit further, do let us know as we might be able to find an arrangement.
Can you cater outside?
Absolutely. We can bring a gazebo and work outside.
Can you personalise your set up to fit a theme?
Absolutely! We can print menus to match your theme and even brand each pancake with your company’s name. For table settings, we offer reusable tablecloths, white linen, or your own branded options. Additionally, we are happy to wear your company t-shirts or uniforms if you prefer!
Does your crêpe machine make a lot of smoke?
There is a bit of steam coming from the griddle so to avoid setting off the fire alarm and having the fire department join the party (as nice as it would be), we recommend that you deactivate or neutralize your fire alarm for the duration of our cooking (taping a plastic bag over it usually does the trick). If possible, it is also good idea to place us next to a window or door for aeration but this is not mandatory.
Do you have liability insurance?
Absolutely, we are fully insured with coverage up to £5 million for public and products liability. Please just ask if you would like a certificate.
Are pancakes going to be enough or do I need other foods alongside?
The adequacy of crêpes depends on your event. Most of the time, they are more than sufficient. However, if we are the main caterer for a large number of guests, we suggest offering a few nibbles to enjoy while waiting for their crêpe. A simple green salad also makes a delightful accompaniment to our savory galettes. For an added touch of elegance, consider pairing our pancakes with drinks like Prosecco. It works wonderfully with our flavors and enhances the overall dining experience.
Do you cater for public events such as school or charity fairs?
While our main focus is on private clients, we also enjoy engaging with the community by participating in various public and school events across London. Follow us on Facebook for upcoming dates and details. If you’re organizing an event and would like to include us, please reach out!
